当時はいつもアートと音楽の間を行ったり来たりしていましたね。僕が育ったニュージャージーの家にはたくさんの楽器がありましたし、その頃はいつもスケッチブックを持ち歩いてもいましたよ。思春期の頃は色々なものから影響を受けました。10代の頃は、音楽でいうと、当時盛り上がっていた、いわゆる『ブリティッシュ・インヴェイジョン』に夢中でした。ビートルズ、ストーンズ、キンクスといったね。それから、彼らに影響を受けたミュージシャンにも興味を覚えるようになりました。生まれて初めて足を運んだコンサートは16歳の時に観たチャック・ベリーのショー。それからボー・ディドリーのライブにも行きましたよ。彼らの奏でるビッグ・ビートが大好きでした。同様に、グルーヴィーなサウンドのT・レックスも好きになりましたね。アートでいうと、まさにNYポップアートで、間違いなくウォーホールですね。彼の作品の持つユーモアが気に入ったし、なによりも視覚を通じたロックンロールだと感じたんですよ。NYアートシーン、ウォーホール以外にも、『ザ・ヘアリー・フー』というシカゴのアーティスト集団からも影響を受けました。 |

I always floated back and forth between the two. There were lots of instruments around my house when I was growing up and I was always carrying a sketch book. My influences are pretty diverse. Musically I was really interested in all the 'british invasion' stuff as a teen, specifically the Beatles, the Stones, and the Kinks. I started looking into what they liked. The first show I ever saw was Chuck Berry, this was 1973, I was 16 years old. I saw Bo Diddley around the same time I really loved that big beat. Later I liked TRex for the same reason, that groove thing. As far as art it was the NY Pop artists mostly, Warhol certainly. I liked the humor of it and it felt visually like rock and roll. There was also a group of artists out of Chicago called 'The Hairy Who' that made a big impression on me. |
